Fate of a Distant Future Book Cover Illustration Spread

Digital, Client Work, 2022

Independent book store and publisher, 8letters, approached me this time to recreate the book cover for Mr. Renato Tranquilino’s sci-fi book, Fate of a Distant Future!

I initially presented three concept studies basing on the stories found in the book, but in the end, we went with a sketch that the author provided to us which I illustrated into its final version below:

The book cover illustration spread!

The spread with the spine

This was a challenge for me, since it’s my first time to illustrate a cover under the science fiction genre and to use a palette tinged with grays. I’m glad I had a guide to follow which was Mr. Renato’s sketch based on his story Crankbait from the book. He gave us good descriptions about this gray planet which allowed me to clearly depict it visually.

I especially enjoyed doing the line art for this project! I used a brush and the lasso tool on Adobe Photoshop to do it.

Since it’s a sci-fi book too, I aimed to have that ‘graphic novel look’ for the cover. Sci-fi is a highly imaginative genre which I wanted to show visually through this art direction.

Dragon-like creatures flying against a cumulonimbus cloud

An astronaut running away from something…

Alien fungi and fauna!

Could this large carnivorous lizard be chasing the astronaut?

The crew setting up tents and unloading cargo

Destroyed vegetation
