Set Sail Into Postcards for Circe Candle

Client Project, Digital Illustration & Writing, March 2022

Circe Candle approached me to create postcards for their Set Sail Into candles! The scope of work included illustrating and writing. The places are Aeaea Island and Mt. Olympus which are two significant settings in Circe’s story.

Our creative process started with me providing rough sketches, along with the suggested color palette, which I based from elements of Circe Candle’s off-white candles and wood wicks. I also prepared the draft for the writings to be placed on both postcards.

My client provided a few excerpts from Madeline Miller’s book Circe for me as a guide on what kind of message, theme, and atmosphere I should write in mind with.

In regards to the illustration, we made Aeaea Island smaller in scale and surrounded by a wide expanse of water. No other lands or ships are in sight to show the loneliness and isolation that Circe felt and lived with in the island. Meanwhile, we made Mt. Olympus grand yet forlorn set in the middle of clouds to show Circe’s view of the gods and goddesses.

When my client has approved the rough sketches, draft, and palette, we moved to refining the sketches.

Initially, we put lines for people to write on at the front, because at first, they were just to be one-sided postcards, but towards the end, we decided to put the blank spaces at the back instead, so they can write more freely!

I had a great time working with Circe Candle! It rekindled my appreciation for the Greek myths again. You may check out the photos below of the candles and postcards courtesy of Circe Candle! (With permission from my client)
