Daily Bread

Comic, 2020

I was writing in my journal this morning when the thought came: God gives me daily bread, but do I eat it? What do I do with the sustenance? What do we do with our daily bread?

Maybe during those days when I felt spiritually hungry, I was too proud to eat just bread. I felt that it wasn’t enough, because my hunger was deep, my fears were great, and my worries were plenty. I wonder how many pieces of bread I’ve received that turned rotten due to the times I shook my head and said, “I have no appetite for bread.”

And yet, after everything, it proves to be enough to satiate me. We receive bread daily. Spiritual food. Do we eat it when we realize that it has been served on a clean plate on a new day? And do we break it and share it to someone who may need a little encouragement?

Breaking bread – I’ve always liked that imagery. The two men in Emmaus, whom Jesus met along the road after He has risen from the dead, knew it was Jesus they were walking with when he broke bread and gave some to them. Sometimes, with all that’s going on, we may lack belief, we may lack faith. When we share the joys and woes of our souls through bread, it is like we are believing for each other.

“Can you believe for me, friend, just this one moment, because I can’t take how the world is right now,” asks the receiver of the other half. And the the giver says, “Of course. I’ll believe for you and for us.” I don’t know if I’m making sense. But I guess it’s just really about consuming our daily bread and not letting it sit and be spoilt.
